The 1991 season marked a turning point in Fondmetal’s history: after years of technical partnerships and supplying components, Gabriele Rumi decided to take the plunge. Thus, the Fomet-1, the first single-seater designed entirely under the auspices of the Fondmetal team, with the clear ambition of establishing itself as an independent manufacturer in the Formula 1 World Championship.
The project is entrusted to the newly formed Fomet, based in Bicester, in the United Kingdom. Leading the technical team is Robin Herd, a motorsport legend and co-founder of March Engineering, alongside Tim Holloway and Tino Belli. The result is a modern single-seater with a streamlined design and advanced technical solutions compared to the previous FA1M‑E, which was developed during the Osella era.
Beneath the bodywork beats the famous Ford Cosworth DFR V8, tuned by Brian Hart: a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated engine—solid and reliable—that delivers a good balance between power and drivability. The carbon fiber is the result of careful structural and aerodynamic optimization, featuring tapered side pods and redesigned air intakes to improve airflow and lower the center of pressure. The extended wheelbase and push-rod suspension round out a technical package designed to enhance drivability on the most technically demanding tracks on the calendar.
