The Osella FA1M marked a technical and design turning point in the team’s history, thanks to the vision of Antonio Tomaini, a former Ferrari engineer, who designed a single-seater that was radically different from previous generations. The team abandoned the turbocharged Alfa Romeo 890T, the FA1M adopted the more reliable and lightweight naturally aspirated Ford Cosworth DFR, a choice that simplified maintenance and reduced fuel consumption without sacrificing competitive performance.
The monocoque chassis made of carbon fiber, which is sleeker and stiffer, is the result of extensive development work in the wind tunnel: the completely redesigned body features lower and shorter side skirts, optimizing airflow and improving stability at high speeds. A distinctive feature is the sculpted air intake above the cockpit, designed to feed the engine more efficiently and boost the overall performance of the powertrain.
In 1990, FA1M’s evolution became intertwined with the history of Fondmetal: Gabriele Rumi, an entrepreneur with a passion for motorsports and already a supplier of alloy wheels to the top racing series, acquired a significant stake in the Osella team. Starting that season, the team officially competed under the name Fondmetal Osella, ushering in a new phase of technical revitalization and international visibility for the brand.
